DUBAI // A man who was in court for stealing a car forged an official waiver and gave it to judges claiming it was from the car owner.
Omani A A, 31, was charged with theft but when he forged the document and was caught, he faced a new charge of forgery. He denied both at Dubai Criminal Court last March but was found guilty.
On August 4, 2013, the Omani stole a car that was left running by its female owner in front of a supermarket at the French cluster of International City.
“I just rushed into the supermarket to get some candy then returned to find the car gone — I called police right away,” said Syrian H H, 41.
Police tracked down and arrested the suspect after a chase in the early hours of August 8 the same year. He was referred to court on a theft charge but in court he submitted a waiver that was found to be forged.
Prosecutors then charged him with forgery, duplicating a Dubai Courts stamp, using a forged document, as well as theft.
He was found guilty and sentenced to six months in jail, to be followed by deportation.
