ABU DHABI // The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs addressed more than 150 representatives of 70 countries at the first meeting of the administrative committee of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) yesterday. At a meeting at Emirates Palace, Dr Mohammed Anwar Gargash, said: "This gathering symbolises the world's determination to prepare for a post-oil era and the UAE's readiness to take a lead in the region in the task of diversifying our energy sources," according to the state-owned news agency, WAM.
Abu Dhabi was chosen to host the headquarters of the international organisation in June after Austria and Germany withdrew their bids to avoid a contentious vote. Irena was established early last year to encourage governments to adopt renewable energy sources. The UAE lobbied aggressively to host the headquarters in the hope that it would increase the country's profile. The offices are to be established in the carbon-neutral Masdar City, which is currently under construction.
Irena's administrative committee will meet again today to further discuss the organisation's establishment.

Water waste
In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.
Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.
A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.
The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
