The designers of a cooling suit for outdoor workers are among the winners of a prize designed to encourage entrepreneurship among young Emiratis.
The Aryam project, which attempts to keep workers comfortable in the heat, was picked alongside the makers of an Arabic leaning programme for children, an online system that connects patients with healthcate providers and an app designed to make home decoration easier.
In the UAE, Pitch@Palace competition, set up by Prince Andrew, the UK royal, helps provide Emirati entrepreneurs with the opportunity to highlight their projects to a global audience of potential investors.
It is backed by the Khalifa Fund, which aims to boost the private sector in the Emirates by encouraging UAE nationals to start their own businesses.
The winners were selected from a field of 12 finalists on Wednesday, with all the contestants already receiving expert support to help them develop their projects.
"Over the last three years, Pitch@Palace UAE has received strong response and remarkable success, proving itself as a strategic platform in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in the UAE,” said Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of the Khalifa Fund.
"We first launched this competition in 2016 as part of our strategy to promote entrepreneurship across the country, bolster and promote the culture of freelancing and amplify the work of entrepreneurs, start-ups and SMEs.
“We also aim at providing them with the opportunity to meet industry experts and receive support, mentoring, financing solutions and the opportunity to connect with local and global stakeholders and hear from industry experts to promote a self-employment environment within the country.”
They will now compete in a GCC-wide final for the Pitch@Palace regional final in Bahrain next month.
A global final will then be held in London in December.

US households add $601bn of debt in 2019
American households borrowed another $601 billion (Dh2.2bn) in 2019, the largest yearly gain since 2007, just before the global financial crisis, according to February data from the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
Fuelled by rising mortgage debt as homebuyers continued to take advantage of low interest rates, the increase last year brought total household debt to a record high, surpassing the previous peak reached in 2008 just before the market crash, according to the report.
Following the 22nd straight quarter of growth, American household debt swelled to $14.15 trillion by the end of 2019, the New York Fed said in its quarterly report.
In the final three months of the year, new home loans jumped to their highest volume since the fourth quarter of 2005, while credit cards and auto loans also added to the increase.
The bad debt load is taking its toll on some households, and the New York Fed warned that more and more credit card borrowers — particularly young people — were falling behind on their payments.
"Younger borrowers, who are disproportionately likely to have credit cards and student loans as their primary form of debt, struggle more than others with on-time repayment," New York Fed researchers said.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
