DUBAI // Five bootleggers who killed one man and assaulted another after they pretended to be policemen looking for a bribe will spend five years in prison each.
The Indian bootleggers, aged between 25 and 28, were selling alcohol to passers-by in the Al Quoz when they were approached by an Egyptian, 47, and the deceased, whose nationality and age were not in court records, .
“They said the two men posed as police officers and asked for money not to arrest them,” said an Emirati policeman, 29.
On December 30 last year, the bootleggers discovered the men were not police officers and decided to attack them.
“We were walking back to our accommodation when the men appeared carrying sticks,” said the Egyptian. “They attacked us and hit us all over our bodies.”
Police arrested the defendants shortly after. They were charged with physical assault that led to the death of a person and the injury of another.
They will be deported after serving their prison terms.
