DUBAI// A man caught trying to smuggle 52 boxes of alcohol in the boot of his car, ran from police into the desert before offering the arresting officers the bottles as a bribe, Dubai Criminal Court heard.
A police patrol pulled over a suspicious car on Emirates Road in October. Officers asked the Pakistani driver, M A, 29, for his papers and requested he open up the car’s boot.
“He told us that he had just received a phone call informing him his mother had passed away and that he was in a hurry,” said Emirati policeman M B, 21.
M B said the driver kept repeating himself instead of opening the boot. When he finally did, he got out of the car and fled into the desert.
“As we saw the alcohol, he started running towards the desert and I chased him while my colleague took the patrol car and chased as well,” said M B.
After 3km M B caught up to the defendant.
“‘What is the use of catching me?’ he said to me and to my colleague when we apprehended him,” said M B, who added that M A offered the officers a Dh10,000 as well as the 52 bottles of alcohol in return for letting him go.
“We kept silent as he kept repeating his offer, then we called for back up,” said M B, adding that when the defendant was questioned he confessed that he was given the alcohol by a man in Ajman to deliver to Dubai in return for Dh300.
“From my experience, I know that such alcohol is smuggled then sold to workers in accommodations,” said M B.
The defendant was referred to the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours on a charge of possessing alcohol without a license and was sentenced to a month in jail. He was also referred to the Dubai Criminal Court on a charge of offering a bribe to police officers.
“No I did not,” the defendant told judges when faced with the bribe charge.
The next hearing will be on March 26.

'Young girls thinking of big ideas'
Words come easy for aspiring writer Afra Al Muhairb. The business side of books, on the other hand, is entirely foreign to the 16-year-old Emirati. So, she followed her father’s advice and enroled in the Abu Dhabi Education Council’s summer entrepreneurship course at Abu Dhabi University hoping to pick up a few new skills.
“Most of us have this dream of opening a business,” said Afra, referring to her peers are “young girls thinking of big ideas.”
In the three-week class, pupils are challenged to come up with a business and develop an operational and marketing plan to support their idea. But, the learning goes far beyond sales and branding, said teacher Sonia Elhaj.
“It’s not only about starting up a business, it’s all the meta skills that goes with it -- building self confidence, communication,” said Ms Elhaj. “It’s a way to coach them and to harness ideas and to allow them to be creative. They are really hungry to do this and be heard. They are so happy to be actually doing something, to be engaged in creating something new, not only sitting and listening and getting new information and new knowledge. Now they are applying that knowledge.”
Afra’s team decided to focus their business idea on a restaurant modelled after the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Each level would have a different international cuisine and all the meat would be halal. The pupils thought of this after discussing a common problem they face when travelling abroad.
“Sometimes we find the struggle of finding halal food, so we just eat fish and cheese, so it’s hard for us to spend 20 days with fish and cheese,” said Afra. “So we made this tower so every person who comes – from Africa, from America – they will find the right food to eat.”

Uefa Nations League: How it works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.

Although social media can be harmful to our mental health, paradoxically, one of the antidotes comes with the many social-media accounts devoted to normalising mental-health struggles. With Hope UAE is one of them.
The group, which has about 3,600 followers, was started three years ago by five Emirati women to address the stigma surrounding the subject. Via Instagram, the group recently began featuring personal accounts by Emiratis. The posts are written under the hashtag #mymindmatters, along with a black-and-white photo of the subject holding the group’s signature red balloon.
“Depression is ugly,” says one of the users, Amani. “It paints everything around me and everything in me.”
Saaed, meanwhile, faces the daunting task of caring for four family members with psychological disorders. “I’ve had no support and no resources here to help me,” he says. “It has been, and still is, a one-man battle against the demons of fractured minds.”
In addition to With Hope UAE’s frank social-media presence, the group holds talks and workshops in Dubai. “Change takes time,” Reem Al Ali, vice chairman and a founding member of With Hope UAE, told The National earlier this year. “It won’t happen overnight, and it will take persistent and passionate people to bring about this change.”
