The body of an Emirati youth was recovered near a waterfall in Thailand on Friday morning, the state news agency Wam reported.

The body of Sultan Al Shehhi, 21, was found on the island of Phuket in southern Thailand, said Omran Al Shamsi, the ambassador to Thailand.

"Upon learning that the said national had gone missing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Embassy in Bangkok, initiated search and investigations in cooperation with the competent local authorities," Mr Al Shamsi said.

"Following search and investigations, the Thai authorities were able to find the body. Procedures to bring his body home to the UAE as soon as possible are being finalised."

Mr Al Shamsi expressed his condolences to the family of the young man.
