SHARJAH // Arabic books publishers are seeking funding to have their books translated into other languages.

More than 630 applications have been submitted by publishers from Arab and international publishers to receive funding from Sharjah International Book Fair, an increase on the previous years.

The grant fund was launched to promote the translation of Arabic text in the region and around the world, it’s valued at $1,500 for children’s books and up to $4,000 for other titles.

It applies only for copyrighted works or that work that is in the public domain.

SIBF received 36 requests to translate 105 Arabic titles into other languages, while 129 books were applied for by foreign publishers to be translated into Arabic.

Ahmed Al Ameri, chairman of Sharjah Book Authority, said: “There is a growing interest by International publishers to give Arab readers access to their books.”

SIBF grants are awarded prior to Sharjah International Book Fair in November.
