DUBAI // A man punched, choked and threatened to kill a colleague at her home after she asked about her salary.

J L, 56, an American oil industry consultant, was at Tajikistani marketing manager N R’s home in Jumeirah Beach Residence in November 2013.

Prosecutors at Dubai Criminal Court said he became enraged, punching her in the face, banging her head against a wall repeatedly then kicking her several times to the back and body after she fell.

The manager, 36, said the assault began when she asked the consultant about her pay.

She said he became violent after she told him she was fed up. Records did not state the nature of their relationship.

He was asleep when police arrived and it took about two hours for officers to wake him and get him to let them in.

On Sunday, the American was sentenced to three months in jail for insulting and assaulting a female colleague, and threatening to kill her.

He was not in court.
