AJMAN // The Ruler of Ajman opened a Dh5 million memorial for fallen Emirati servicemen on Thursday, following Commemoration Day.
The 13-metre memorial was built on a 35-square-metre area at Flag Park in Al Jurf. Its design includes an empty space in the centre in shape of a soldier raising a flag. A 122m-high flagpole is located behind the monument.
The inauguration was attended by Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, and Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid, Crown Prince of Ajman, as well as families of servicemen and officials, officers, Emiratis and residents.
Sultan Al Balooshi, whose brother Fahad died in September last year while participating in the Saudi-led coalition’s Operation Restoring Hope in Yemen, said no words could describe his feeling and pride for his brother.
“I am pleased that rulers of the UAE have remembered martyrs and their families. I am happy that this thing has literally united us more and made us one house, which is Zayed’s house,” said Mr Al Balooshi, referring to the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed.
“My feeling is mixed with patriotism, pride and honour of the country and its rulers and citizens.”
Fahad’s son, Obaid Al Balooshi, said he is proud that his father is a national hero and sacrificed for the homeland.
“Thank God that I am the son of a martyr, and I am so glad that I am here to see the inauguration of the memorial to all fallen servicemen and receive the honour trophy,” the 12-year-old said.
Obaid said his family created a cabinet at their home to display his father’s certificates and trophies that he received during his life and after his death in service of the country.
“My father is still alive inside our hearts and we want to show everyone all his accomplishments,” said Obaid.
Omran Al Balooshi, whose brother Nader died during military training in the capital, said he attended the opening of the memorial with pride and honour.
“Receiving an invitation from the Ruler of Ajman to attend the inauguration and receive the trophy is an honour for me,” Mr Al Balooshi said.
“I am also proud and happy that Rulers are supporting us and always remembering the Emirati martyrs.”
