DUBAI // An accountant who stole more than Dh100,000 from a Dubai Government company told a court that she felt so guilty about taking the money she turned herself in.

“I worked there for 10 years and the regret for what I did was never gone, so I willingly went to the manager and informed him,” the Filipina, 46, told judges at Dubai Criminal Court.

The woman was charged with fraudulently obtaining Dh102,232 from her employer between June 2015 and January 2017 by pocketing money instead of depositing it into the company’s account.

An Emirati operations manager said that the defendant was responsible for issuing and reviewing bills, and issuing cheques.

“She also handled preparing financial reports and payments to other parties inside and outside the company,” he said.

He said the woman issued five cheques that she told her employer were pending payments, cashed them and kept the money.

The accountant was arrested on April 5 this year. She told the court that she wants to repay the money she took.

A verdict is expected on July 23.
