ABU DHABI // To mark Zayed Humanitarian Day, Abu Dhabi Media employees distributed iftar meal boxes to motorists and passers-by.

The volunteers set up camp on the pavement in front of the city bus station on Muroor Road and at a mosque car park near the Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre.

The distribution was organised by Abdulla Al Shuaibi and Mohammed Al Yammahi of the communications department at Abu Dhabi Media.

Maha Al Nuwais, who works in Abu Dhabi Media’s human resources department, was one of the volunteers, and she brought her children, nieces and nephews to help out.

The children helped distribute the packets to the poor who were gathered at the locations. Sultan, 15, Mariam, 12, Ali, 9, Fatima, 6, and Hassan, 7, were all glad to help out.

“I was happy to hear about the gesture and decided to be a part of it,” Ms Al Nuwais said.

“This is a great opportunity to do good work. Also, I wanted to expose my children to such social work. It is good for them to understand the needs of others.

“They get everything they want but they should feel for other people who are away from their families or are missing their families or the food they eat in their houses.”

Zayed Humanitarian Day was organised to mark the anniversary of the passing of Sheikh Zayed, the founder of the UAE, on the 19th day of Ramadan, 2004.

People across the country were asked to undertake humanitarian initiatives to commemorate Sheikh Zayed’s commitment to helping the needy.
