ABU DHABI // The Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority registered 221 miscellaneous maritime accidents from the January until the end of August, reflecting the types of problems that generally occur due to ignorance or disregard of maritime safety procedures and laws.
The authority said a high number of vessels encountered mechanical problems and broke down. Other problems included running out of fuel, requiring rescue teams to intervene. Sinking accidents came last, but are not the least dangerous. They are often the result of non-adherence to maritime safety precautions.
The authority said the launch of the maritime safety campaign Bihar, or Seas, complements its efforts and promotes maritime security and safety. It also encourages preservation of the marine environment.
