Sheikh Hamdan toured the scenic area of geological importance 45 kilometres east of Abu Dhabi.
Sheikh Hamdan called in at the visitor centre, which includes a viewing area, gallery and information about the ancient site, whose spectacular formations were created by wind action on lightly cemented, cross-bedded dune sands.
Officials at the inauguration of the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes Protected Area, which will be open free of charge to visitors daily.

Nature trails of up to 3km in length are well lit to allow visitors to roam the dunes until late at night.
The fossil dunes, which were formed 120,000 years ago, have been protected with 7km of fencing, together with paths, signposts and rest areas for visitors.
The Al Wathba site is comprised of more than 1,700 fossil dunes spread over 7 sq km.
