SHARJAH // Fifteen men arrested following a mass brawl on Friday, involving knives and a Kalashnikov rifle, will be held for seven days while an investigation takes places.
Khor Fakan public prosecutor Mohammed Ibrahim said the men should be kept in custody until the investigation into the incident at an industrial area in the early hours is complete.
The 15 are among 18 men in total, all of whom have criminal records, that are suspected of being involved in the fight. The fight left five people injured, including one critically after he was shot in the stomach. Three of the men, who police said were in their twenties, are still on the run.
On Friday Sharjah Police said a personal dispute led to a knife fight before one of the men produced a firearm and fired it.
Police were notified by Khor Fakkan Hospital after the five injured were admitted.
Prosecutors have been quizzing the men for more than 20 hours and say statements from them are contradictory, with some admitting to the facts while others are denying involvement.
Police are still trying to locate the Kalashnikov used in the shooting. The knives and daggers were retrieved at the scene.
