DUBAI// A helicopter pilot and a police rescue team using specialised marine towing equipment braved high winds and waves to rescue 10 crew members of a dhow that had veered off route and ran aground off Palm Deira.
The boat's Iranian crew did not suffer any injuries.
The dhow strayed off course on Tuesday morning, seven nautical miles away from the creek.
It took the team from Marine Unit at Dubai Police Rescue Department more than 10 hours to pull the dhow out of the sand.
"Immediately after receiving the report, rescue teams were deployed. But it was difficult to reach the dhow," said Captain Yehia Mohammed, the team's head. "High waves prevented us from being able to pull the dhow from the sand."
