DUBAI // Four Emiratis have been jailed for a year each for impersonating police to rob a man of Dh7,000.
Prosecutors said K Y, a 24-year-old soldier, A A, a jobless 26-year-old, R A, 27, and K A, 26, accosted Bangladeshi A M on January 12 last year. Pretending to be detectives, they demanded to see A M’s identity card.
“I got suspicious because two of them stopped me after midnight, so I requested to see their IDs,” said A M, adding that A A flashed a card with a logo similar to that of the Dubai Police’s.
When A M took out his wallet to show them his identity card, the pair attacked him and tried to take his wallet.
A car drove by and stopped where they were. Two Emiratis stepped out and joined the attack, A M said.
The four Emiratis took his wallet and drove away.
I M, a 28-year-old taxi driver, said he saw the men beating A M. He followed their car and was able to note down its licence plate number before making a police report.
Last April, the four Emiratis failed to appear at the Dubai Criminal Court and did not enter their pleas against the charges of impersonating police officers and armed theft.
