Portsmouth have signed Younes Kaboul from Tottenham after the defender passed his medical. Portsmouth did not announce a transfer fee for the 22-year-old French defender, who was subject to a bid by Sunderland and rumoured interest from Aston Villa. British papers reported that he would cost about £6 million (Dh42.3 million) Kaboul was a peripheral figure in his debut season at Tottenham, scoring four goals in 29 appearances but looking shaky in defence after Tottenham paid Auxerre about £8 million for him. The player - who was largely sidelined last season when Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson were fit - will compete with former England international Sol Campbell and Sylvain Distin for a place in central defence. * AP
