DUBAI // Aaqib Javed, the UAE coach, reckons his side have been given a valuable reality check after losing to Nepal by five wickets on Tuesday. The match was the first warm-up fixture for the national team ahead of the start of World Twenty20 Qualifiers on Friday.
The UAE will have to improve on their shoddy fielding display against Nepal if they are going to earn one of the six berths on offer to play in Bangladesh next year.
“Sometimes it is good to be given a tough game early on,” Aaqib said. “Sloppy fielding let us down. It is always a soft part of our game, but I think we have learnt what we wanted to.”
Pubudu Dassanayake, Nepal’s coach, said: “It feels good because the past four times we have played UAE, in either 50-over or Twenty20, we have beaten them.
“As a side we are quite comfortable right now and looking forward to the tournament.”
The UAE meet Denmark in another warm-up match at 2pm today in Abu Dhabi.
Scotland continued their preparations for the World Twenty20 Qualifier with a comfortable, seven-wicket victory over the United States in Dubai.
Calum MacLeod struck 46 at the top of the order while captain Kyle Coetzer’s unbeaten 35 off 24 deliveries eased the Scots to their victory target of 134 with seven balls to spare in Dubai.
The US had been restricted to 133 for seven.
Iain Wardlaw was the pick of the attack with three for 25 in Scotland’s penultimate warm-up match before they start their World Twenty20 qualifying campaign against Bermuda at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday.
An unbeaten 75 by William Porterfield, the captain, helped Ireland to a six-wicket win over the Netherlands in Abu Dhabi.
Porterfield hit seven fours and a pair of sixes to lead his side past Holland’s total of 139 for five with two balls to spare.
