UAE Derby results: Saeed bin Suroor’s Thunder Snow edges past Epicharis in photo finish as Master Plan finishes third

It marks back-to-back wins on the day for jockey Christophe Soumillon. It is also Emirati trainer Bin Suroor’s first win for the evening.

Saeed bin Suroor, the Godolphin trainer, added a sixth UAE Derby with Thunder Storm, who under Christophe Soumillon, edged Japan’s Epicharis ridden by Christophe Lemaire in a photo in the US$2 million (Dh7.34m) Group 2 race.

Soumillon made the first run on the home stretch to prevail by a short head after a ding-dong battle to the winning post over the 1,900-metre trip. Master Plan under John Velazquez finished third.

Soumillon was celebrating back-to-back victories after claiming the Dubai Gold Cup 45 minutes earlier. Bin Suroor’s record in the 10th running of the UAE Derby now improves to six with South African Mike de Kock on four.​
