Sam Tomkins believes Wigan, the Super League leaders, must improve their defence if they are to beat Leeds tonight. The Warriors, who top the table by two points, have conceded 46 points in their previous two games, despite winning both. "Our attack is coming on well but our defence has got some work to do," said the 21-year-old stand-off. "We leaked 22 points against Castleford, which is too much, we shouldn't be doing that.
"We can't afford to do that against Leeds. They're a quality side and they'll be ready for this." Leeds may be the defending champions but a series of injuries have seen a depleted side win just three of their seven games this term. There is some good news for Brian McClennan, the Leeds coach, though, as he is able to include five players who missed last week's home defeat to Hull KR in his squad for the trip to the DW Stadium, including Kevin Sinfield, the captain. However, they are still without the services of Jamie Peacock, the Great Britain captain, through injury so McClennan will hand a debut to Luke Amble, the 19-year-old forward.
Elsewhere, Daryl Millard has said the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, this season's surprise package, can still improve on their impressive start. John Kear's men have won five of their seven matches this term with Millard and Shane Tronc, recruited from the NRL last year, making immediate impacts at Belle Vue. Millard, who played for the Canterbury Bulldogs and the St George-Illawarra Dragons, has scored six tries so far and will face Ryan Atkins, the man he was brought into replace, at Warrington tonight, with both teams level on 10 points.
"We've had a solid enough start to the season but there's a belief in the squad that we can get better. We've not put a whole 80-minute performance together yet," said Millard.
