Jamie Murray on doubles rise with John Peers: ‘We’ve stuck through it, we’re in the Wimbledon final’

Jamie Murray will line up in his second Wimbledon final on Saturday after he and Australian John Peers moved a step away from the men’s doubles title.

Scottish left-hander Murray, brother of Andy Murray, paired up with Peers to see off the combination of Jonathan Erlich and Philipp Petzschner 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

With mother Judy Murray looking on, the duo of Murray and Peers were impressive winners in four sets.

They will play Dutchman Jean-Julien Roger and Romanian Horia Tecau in the final.

Murray won the mixed doubles in 2007 with Serbian Jelena Jankovic, and began playing with Peers two-and-a-half years ago.

“It was a great result for us,” Murray said.

“We got off to a bit of a slow start, especially me with my serve, I was struggling.

“I think we were helped out by ‘Joni’ (Erlich) struggling a lot with his knee, which didn’t help them.”

Erlich’s knee was strapped up and hindered his movement, with the injury pre-dating the start of the match.

It was important for Murray and Peers to ignore that factor, especially once they fell a set behind.

“It was a Wimbledon semi-final so we put it out of our minds,” Murray told the BBC. “John played a lot of great shots especially at the end of the third set and start of the fourth and we didn’t look back from there.”

Murray and Peers have landed five tour titles together but this is their greatest achievement as a partnership, their reward for toughing it out during the hard times doubles duos can go through.

“This is our third year together so for doubles teams that’s quite a long while,” Murray said.

“Most guys seem to fall out with each other and quit on it or try for something better.

“We’ve stuck through it, we’re in the Wimbledon final, we’re excited to be here.

“Hopefully on Saturday we can lift the trophy but we’re going to have a really tough match.”

Peers added: “It’s like a marriage out there. You spend that much time at each other you’ve got to enjoy the ride because it’s always up and down, but if there’s more ups than downs it’s a good ride.”
