Marin Cilic became the first Croatian male to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open after he fended off an impressive Andy Roddick comeback in five sets. 14th seed Cilic won an epic last-eight battle 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 in a match which lasted just under four hours at the Rod Laver Arena. It was the third time in five matches that Cilic has been taken the distance at Melbourne Park this year. Cilic's victory was finally sealed when Roddick pushed a backhand volley wide to prompt the Croatian to fall to his knees in delighted exhaustion. "It wasn't easy. I've got experience to be here in this situation now," Cilic said. "I just had a few extra gears in the last set. It wasn't easy.
"I was struggling on serve, he was putting pressure on me and I didn't know what to do. "But point-by-point I worked back." The 21-year-old, who is the youngest player left in the draw, will play the winner of the blockbuster encounter between the defending champion Rafael Nadal and the fifth seed Andy Murray. After reaching his first-ever semi-final Cilic believes he still has the energy to reach the final, despite his protracted matches so far. "I can go one more," he said. "Why not?"
Cilic has a good record against both his potential rivals in the last four having beaten Nadal in straight sets their only meeting at Beijing last year. The Croatian also eliminated Murray in their most recent meeting at the US Open in September when he upset the Scot in the fourth round. * PA Sport

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
What are the main cyber security threats?

Cyber terrorism - Social media platforms are used to spread radical ideologies, misinformation and disinformation, often with the aim of disrupting critical infrastructure such as power grids.
Cyber warfare - Shaped by geopolitical tension, hostile actors seek to infiltrate and compromise national infrastructure, using one country’s systems as a springboard to launch attacks on others.

Two-step truce
The UN-brokered ceasefire deal for Hodeidah will be implemented in two stages, with the first to be completed before the New Year begins, according to the Arab Coalition supporting the Yemeni government.
By midnight on December 31, the Houthi rebels will have to withdraw from the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa and Al Saqef, coalition officials told The National.
The second stage will be the complete withdrawal of all pro-government forces and rebels from Hodeidah city, to be completed by midnight on January 7.
The process is to be overseen by a Redeployment Co-ordination Committee (RCC) comprising UN monitors and representatives of the government and the rebels.
The agreement also calls the deployment of UN-supervised neutral forces in the city and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to ensure distribution of aid across the country.
