MONTREAL // Jelena Jankovic missed another chance to become the world No 1 as she lost in the quarter-finals of the Montreal Cup to Dominikia Cibulkova. If Jankovic had reached today's final she would have leapfrogged the current No 1 Ana Ivanovic, who had lost in the third round. But the Serbian remains at the top of the standings thanks to her compatriot's defeat. Of her loss to the Slovakian, Jankovic said: "I don't really think about number one. If it's going to happen, it will happen but at the moment I don't deserve that spot. I am not in the best shape."
Cibulkova was due to face Marion Bartoli in the semi-final after the French player beat Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-2, 6-3. The other semi-final was between the Russian Dinara Safina and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Meanwhile, a shoulder injury has ruled the world No 3 Maria Sharapova out of the Olympic Games and also the US Open. The Russian will be sidelined as she recuperates. * Reuters
