Six major doping scandals since Seoul Games

It is 25 years since Canada’s Ben Johnson was stripped of his 100-metre gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics after testing positive for banned steroids. Here are six other sprint drugs scandals since then:

Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou (Greece) Thanou (100m silver medallist in Sydney) and her Greek teammate Kenteris (Sydney 200m champion) were accused of faking a motorcycle crash before the 2004 Games to skip a dope test. They were given two-year bans.

Tim Montgomery (US) and Dwain Chambers (Britain) Both were implicated in the Balco scandal. The American set a 100m world record of 9.78 seconds in 2002, but admitted to doping at the 2000 Sydney Games, where he finished fourth in the 100m final. He was banned in 2003 after testing positive for the steroid THG.

Marion Jones (US) The biggest victim of the Balco scandal, Jones, left, became the first woman to win five medals at a single Olympics in 2000. After years of denial, she confessed to cheating and was jailed for lying to federal investigators.

Justin Gatlin (US) The American won gold in the 100m at the 2004 Games and has served two doping bans, including four years for excessive levels of testosterone. He won 100m bronze at the 2012 Games and two silvers at the 2013 world championships.

Veronica Campbell-Brown (Jamaica) The two-time Olympic 200m champion was suspended after testing positive for a banned diuretic in May this year.

Asafa Powell (Jamaica) and Tyson Gay (US) Two of the closest challengers to Usain Bolt, both tested positive this year. Powell held the 100m world record between 2005 and 2008;  Gay swept the sprint titles at the 2007 world championships.
