Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has entered 43 yearlings into the 2013 Epsom Derby - the largest group from a single owner of the 442 horses that made up yesterday's initial entry.
Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin racing operation, based in Dubai and Newmarket, England, also has entered 33 horses.
Neither Sheikh Mohammed's maroon and white colours, nor Godolphin, blue have ever been carried to victory in the 233-year-old race, although he did share in the joy of Princess Haya of Jordan's success with New Approach in 2008.
Sheikh Mohammed has entered four colts that were sired by New Approach, including a colt out of Lady Miletrian that cost more than £500,000 (Dh2.86 million) and another out of Ladeena that made over £450,000 at Tattersalls sales.
Also among Sheikh Mohammed's entry is Superfection, a half-brother to the 2010 Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver, who at US$1.2m (Dh4.4m) topped this year's sale at Saratoga in America.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid has won the Derby twice with Nashwan (1989) and Erhaab (1994) and is represented with 22 entries, including two that will be trained by Richard Hannon, the British 2011 champion trainer.
Meshardal, bred in Germany, was bought on Sheikh Hamdan's behalf in October. A son of Dubawi, he will also be part of a contingent of around six horses that will form the first consignment of horses to be trained by Hannon for the Sheikh Hamdan next season.
Other prominent owners to have entered horses are Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani, who has three with Sir Michael Stoute, while Pearl Bloodstock, owned by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, has a Dalakhani colt with Sir Mark Prescott.
