Sharjah have chosen the Romanian Valeriu Tita, formerly the coach of the Syrian national team, to lead the Pro League side following the resignation earlier this week of the manager Carlos Azenho.
Tita, 45, watched Sharjah's 1-1 home draw with Al Nasr in the Etisalat Cup last night and will take control of the team beginning today, team officials said.
Sharjah is Tita's fourth coaching post in 2011. He led Syria to a third-place finish in group play at the Asian Cup in January and briefly coached the Syrian club Al Shorta and the Kuwaiti side Al Nasr before joining Sharjah.
He previously coached the Syrian club Al Ittihad on two occasions, leading them to the AFC Cup championship last year.
Tita played as a midfielder for his hometown club, FC Drobeta in Turnu Severin before moving in 1993 to the Morocco club Olympique de Casablanca.
Azenha and Sharjah parted ways early this week after the Portuguese expressed a desire to be with his wife, who has been diagnosed with cancer, in their home country.
The Brazilian midfielder Edinho, one of Sharjah's close-season acquisitions, scored in the 81st minute to help the home side salvage a draw in a Group B opener.
Edinho struck the ball from just inside the area, converting a cross from his compatriot Marcelo Oliveira.
Carlos Tenorio, the Brazilian striker, had given Nasr a lead in the 15th minute with an inventive goal, popping the ball over a defender's head and then poking it past the goalkeeper.
Also last night, Dubai defeated Emirates2-1 in Ras Al Khaimah, vaulting the visitors into a share of the Group A lead with Al Jazira who beat Al Wasl, 4-3, in a thriller on Thursday night.
Emirates were expected to play with their reserve side. The first team remains in training in Tunisia, according to the league.

Anxiety and work stress major factors
Anxiety, work stress and social isolation are all factors in the recogised rise in mental health problems.
A study UAE Ministry of Health researchers published in the summer also cited struggles with weight and illnesses as major contributors.
Its authors analysed a dozen separate UAE studies between 2007 and 2017. Prevalence was often higher in university students, women and in people on low incomes.
One showed 28 per cent of female students at a Dubai university reported symptoms linked to depression. Another in Al Ain found 22.2 per cent of students had depressive symptoms - five times the global average.
It said the country has made strides to address mental health problems but said: “Our review highlights the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms and depression, which may long have been overlooked."
Prof Samir Al Adawi, of the department of behavioural medicine at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, who was not involved in the study but is a recognised expert in the Gulf, said how mental health is discussed varies significantly between cultures and nationalities.
“The problem we have in the Gulf is the cross-cultural differences and how people articulate emotional distress," said Prof Al Adawi.
“Someone will say that I have physical complaints rather than emotional complaints. This is the major problem with any discussion around depression."

Who is Mohammed Al Halbousi?
The new speaker of Iraq’s parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi is the youngest person ever to serve in the role.
The 37-year-old was born in Al Garmah in Anbar and studied civil engineering in Baghdad before going into business. His development company Al Hadeed undertook reconstruction contracts rebuilding parts of Fallujah’s infrastructure.
He entered parliament in 2014 and served as a member of the human rights and finance committees until 2017. In August last year he was appointed governor of Anbar, a role in which he has struggled to secure funding to provide services in the war-damaged province and to secure the withdrawal of Shia militias. He relinquished the post when he was sworn in as a member of parliament on September 3.
He is a member of the Al Hal Sunni-based political party and the Sunni-led Coalition of Iraqi Forces, which is Iraq’s largest Sunni alliance with 37 seats from the May 12 election.
He maintains good relations with former Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s State of Law Coaliton, Hadi Al Amiri’s Badr Organisation and Iranian officials.
