Serena Williams features on The National Sport front page on Saturday, September 12 after her shock US Open semi-final defeat to Roberta Vinci.
After cruising to a first set lead, Williams looked set to reach the final where the world No 1 would be playing for the calendar grand slam.
However, Vinci rallied superbly to take the second set before holding her nerve to win an absorbing encounter 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Vinci’s showdown with Flavia Pannetta will be the first all-Italian grand slam final after Pannetta produced a similarly big upset by thrashing No 2 seed Simona Halep 6-1, 6-3.
