Rockies hit back

The Colorado Rockies returned to winning ways on Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa Bay (35-32) had denied the Rockies a franchise record-tying 12th consecutive win a day earlier, and Colorado (32-33) returned the favour by halting the Rays' winning streak at six.

"To win 11 and then lose how we did yesterday, it was a statement game to come back and say, 'hey, we're still a good team'," Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki said. Tulowitzki delivered a three-run homer in the second inning while starting pitcher Aaron Cook recorded his 58th win for Colorado, and career, and tied a franchise record. "It's something pretty special, but I don't want it to end there," Cook said of tying Jason Jennings, who won 58 games for the Rockies from 2001-2006.

Cook allowed three runs in seven innings with two of Tampa's runs coming from Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria hitting home runs. Colorado reliever Manny Corpas tossed a perfect eighth inning and Huston Street handled the ninth for his 14th save of the season. Meanwhile, in other action, David Murphy singled home the winning run in the 10th inning as the Texas Rangers beat Houston 5-4 on a night when Astros catcher Ivan Rodriguez set the major league record for the most games caught with his 2,227th game.

With the interleague win, Texas retained their two-game lead in the American League West over the Los Angeles Angels, who scored three runs in the top of the eighth to come from behind to beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 for their sixth straight win. Dustin Pedroia had three hits and three RBIs as the Boston Red Sox claimed a 6-1 victory over the Florida Marlins, which helped them open up a three-game lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees, who were surprisingly beaten 3-2 by the Washington Nationals, who won for only the 17th time in 63 games this season.

JJ Hardy drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cleveland Indians 9-8 to complete a three-game sweep and maintain their one-game lead in the National League Central over the St Louis Cardinals, who had a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Despite suffering their fourth loss in a row, the Tigers remained top of the AL Central, two games ahead of the Minnesota Twins, who lost emphatically 8-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

What is blockchain?

Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.

The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.

Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.

However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.

Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.
