CC Sabathia won his 19th game of the season as the New York Yankees moved within a game of the American League (AL) East title with a 3-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. Pitching after six days' rest, Sabathia held the Red Sox to one hit over seven innings in the Yankees' fourth consecutive win. Last season with Milwaukee, he had just three days' rest for his last four appearances.
"It definitely feels good to have a lead and be able to get the extra days off," he said. "Last year, I think it took a toll on me mentally more than it did physically." "I think the extra rest has really helped him," said the Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "We want to make sure he's really strong going into October." New York, who have already qualified for the play-offs, have the best record (99-56).
A satisfied Girardi said: "You'd like to clinch it as soon as possible so you could maybe give the guys a couple days and make sure that you keep them well rested and strong." Boston (91-63) are also likely to make the post-season with a healthy lead over the Texas Rangers in the AL wild card race. They need three more wins to qualify. Kevin Youkilis, the Red Sox first baseman, said: "Both of us are probably going to the play-offs unless we don't do something right."
The Detroit Tigers overcame a slow start to beat the Chicago White Sox 12-5. Miguel Cabrera's four hits, including a solo home run in the fifth, put paid to the fine start of the pitcher Freddy Garcia after the Tigers had been held to one hit over the first four innings. The Minnesota Twins are two games behind the Tigers after an 11-6 defeat of the Kansas City Royals. The Royals took an early lead on back-to-back homers by Alberto Callaspo and Bryan Pena in the second before the pitcher Scott Baker retired 13 players.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. What is Reform?
Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.
It was founded in 2018 and originally called the Brexit Party.
Many of its members previously belonged to UKIP or the mainstream Conservatives.
After Brexit took place, the party focused on the reformation of British democracy.
Former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson became its first MP after defecting in March 2024.
The party gained support from Elon Musk, and had hoped the tech billionaire would make a £100m donation. However, Mr Musk changed his mind and called for Mr Farage to step down as leader in a row involving the US tycoon's support for far-right figurehead Tommy Robinson who is in prison for contempt of court.

1 The kind of water athletes drink is important. Gwilym Hooson, a 28-year-old British performer who is currently recovering from knee surgery, found that out when the company was still in Studio City, training for 12 hours a day. “The physio team was like: ‘Why is everyone getting cramps?’ And then they realised we had to add salt and sugar to the water,” he says.
