A number of US-based trainers have their sights set on the world's richest night of racing as two Breeders' Cup winners are aimed at Dubai's lucrative winter season. A rush of high-profile winners are making their way to the Emirates to run at the new Meydan track, which opens its doors for the first time on January 28. Mike Maker, the man behind the shock success of Furthest Land, winner of last November's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile is considering a shot at the US$10 million (Dh36.7m) Dubai World Cup on March 27 for his charge. "We hope he's good enough," Maker said of the five-year-old who triumphed over more fancied rivals in the Breeders' Cup, including Godolphin's third-placed Midshipman for jockey, Garret Gomez, and Aidan O'Brien's fourth, Mastercraftsman under newly-crowned Irish champion rider, Johnny Murtagh. Connections of California Flag, who won the Breeders' Cup Turf at the same meeting are gearing up for a shot at World Cup night's newest race, the Al Quoz Sprint worth $1m. Run on the new turf sprint, the race compliments the Dubai Golden Shaheen, run this year on the all-weather. California Flag beat Jenine Sahadi's runner-up, Gotta Have Her at Santa Anita, but was subsequently fifth in the Hong Kong Sprint having tailed off the early pace after making the running. His trainer, Brian Koriner, expects him to recover well for his Dubai campaign though. "The speed took its toll early on and he lost some weight, but he'll bounce back fast," said the handler. "We've got a long way until March." Meanwhile, English trainer, John Gosden, has sent four Princess Haya bint al Hussein-owned runners for the Dubai International Racing Carnival. The story of Edge
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, established Edge in 2019.

- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.

- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.

Towering concerns
Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away
It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.
The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.
But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.
At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.
The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.
After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.
Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.
And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.
At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.
And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.

Who is Tim-Berners Lee?
Sir Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in a household of mathematicians and computer scientists. Both his mother, Mary Lee, and father, Conway, were early computer scientists who worked on the Ferranti 1 - the world's first commercially-available, general purpose digital computer. Sir Tim studied Physics at the University of Oxford and held a series of roles developing code and building software before moving to Switzerland to work for Cern, the European Particle Physics laboratory. He developed the worldwide web code as a side project in 1989 as a global information-sharing system. After releasing the first web code in 1991, Cern made it open and free for all to use. Sir Tim now campaigns for initiatives to make sure the web remains open and accessible to all.
