Ice hockey is known for its fights, but Steve Ott seemingly took it a bit too far.
The Dallas Stars forward was suspended indefinitely for trying to injure Anaheim's Travis Moen. He received a match penalty, given for deliberately trying to injure an opponent, for his actions during a fight with Moen following Saturday's 4-3 victory by visiting Anaheim.
Ott, 26, was suspended for gouging Moen's eye during the altercation, which occurred seconds after the final horn sounded. He sat out of Sunday's 4-1 loss to visiting Pittsburgh and will not play until he has a hearing with NHL officials, who will determine the length of his suspension.
But the Stars coach Dave Tippett was disappointed that Ott's teammates did not protect him during the exchange, especially since he already had a broken bone in his hand. "I would like to have seen our players engage a little more," Tippett said.
"I'm not asking people to jump in to fight, we're jumping in to protect."
Elsewhere, Vincent Lecavalier recorded two goals and set up another and Mark Recchi notched five assists as the Tampa Bay Lightning skated to an 8-6 victory over the Calgary Flames in a wild contest.
Martin St Louis had a pair of goals - including an empty-netter - and an assist and the rookie Steven Stamkos also tallied and had an assist for the Lightning, who scored three times on the power play to end a seven-game road losing streak (0-6-1).
Tampa Bay's offensive outburst overshadowed Jarome Iginla, who became the Flames' all-time leading scorer with 833 points. The captain scored two goals, including the 400th of his career, to surpass Theoren Fleury's 830 points.
Stephen Weiss and defencemen Bryan McCabe and Jay Bouwmeester netted power-play goals in the first period as the Florida Panthers routed the Washington Capitals 6-2.
