UAE Team Emirates have started their 2019 UCI World Tour season in style by winning the team classification in their first event at the Tour Down Under.
The seven-stage race in Australia, which began on January 13 and concluded on Sunday, awards the team competition title to the team with the best combined time after each stage, with this year's prize going to UAE Team Emirates.
Italian Diego Ulissi led the way for the team in the General Classification, finishing ninth overall, 40 seconds behind tour winner Daryl Impey of Mitchelton Scott.

Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, a new arrival at UAE Team Emirates, was next best-placed for the team, coming in 13th, with compatriot Jan Polanc just behind in 17th.
As well as success on the overall tour, UAE Team Emirates also celebrated a stage win when Belgian Jasper Philipsen claimed Stage 5 after a sprint finish.
“It was a beautiful result for UAE Team Emirates. To get on the podium as the best team in the first World Tour race of the year is amazing,” said sports director Neil Stephens.
“Today we achieved more goals that we were after. We wanted to take the team classification but to try to be in the best possible spots in the individual classification.
"We achieved that considering that we have three riders in the top 15 of the classification, with Ulissi in the top 10.
"The great work that characterises this group added up over the week. It’s an important factor that will show positively in the next wave of competitions."
UAE Team Emirates will next be in World Tour action at their home race - the inaugural UAE Tour. The seven-stage tour begins on February 24 and concludes on March 3.

What is an FTO Designation?
FTO designations impose immigration restrictions on members of the organisation simply by virtue of their membership and triggers a criminal prohibition on knowingly providing material support or resources to the designated organisation as well as asset freezes.

What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
Gender pay parity on track in the UAE
The UAE has a good record on gender pay parity, according to Mercer's Total Remuneration Study.
"In some of the lower levels of jobs women tend to be paid more than men, primarily because men are employed in blue collar jobs and women tend to be employed in white collar jobs which pay better," said Ted Raffoul, career products leader, Mena at Mercer. "I am yet to see a company in the UAE – particularly when you are looking at a blue chip multinationals or some of the bigger local companies – that actively discriminates when it comes to gender on pay."
Mr Raffoul said most gender issues are actually due to the cultural class, as the population is dominated by Asian and Arab cultures where men are generally expected to work and earn whereas women are meant to start a family.
"For that reason, we see a different gender gap. There are less women in senior roles because women tend to focus less on this but that’s not due to any companies having a policy penalising women for any reasons – it’s a cultural thing," he said.
As a result, Mr Raffoul said many companies in the UAE are coming up with benefit package programmes to help working mothers and the career development of women in general.
