In Premier League football, Liverpool started the New Year in the same way as they spent most of the previous 12 months: by winning matches.

Their 2-0 win over Sheffield United meant Jurgen Klopp's side completed a remarkable full calendar year without defeat.

Last week also saw one of the goals of the season during during Brighton & Hove Albion's draw with Chelsea, when Alireza Jahanbakhsh produced a spectacular overhead kick to earn his side a point.

South Africa and Australai both ran out comfortable winners in their respective Boxing Day Test matches against virus-ravaged England and New Zealand, respectively.

The Proteas completed a 107-run victory in the opener at SuperSport Park, while Tim Paine's Australia hammered the Black Caps by 247 runs in Melbourne to claim the second Test and series.
