Sixth place is no sweat for Kobayashi

Kamui Kobayashi celebrated his and BMW Sauber's best result of the season yesterday and then revealed he had not even had to break a sweat to achieve it.

SILVERSTONE, England // Kamui Kobayashi celebrated his and BMW Sauber's best result of the season yesterday and then revealed he had not even had to break a sweat to achieve it. The Japanese driver was sixth in the British Grand Prix, beating his seventh-place finish in Valencia two weeks earlier. The results all point to the Swiss team continuing their improvement after a poor start to the season.

"The race pace today was as good as I thought it would be," said Kobayashi, 23, who started 12th on the grid. "I was pretty confident before the race because I can really feel how the car is getting better and better now. "I had no chance to overtake anybody this time, but I still enjoyed the race. I didn't find it especially hard. I didn't even sweat." Kobayashi took advantage of a good start and smart pit strategy to make up places. As his rivals hit trouble he was able to move up to take the top-six spot. The impressive race followed a fine qualifying display by Kobayashi's teammate, Pedro de la Rosa; the Spaniard was ninth-fastest on the grid.

BMW Sauber continued to move up the order following recent technical updates to their Ferrari-powered package. De la Rosa was unable to translate a fast qualifying run into a high finish yesterday. He was forced to retire due to damage to his rear wing after being hit by the Force India of Adrian Sutil. De la Rosa was running 11th at the time of the incident. He had lost ground at the start after being pushed wide by Rubens Barrichello's Williams-Toyota.

"I was still racing for points when I was hit from behind at half distance of the race because not everybody in front of me had stopped by then," said De la Rosa. "Unfortunately the damage proved to be too bad to continue." @Email:gcaygill@thenational.ae

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush

Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”

A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.

“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”

The UN General Assembly President in quotes:

YEMEN: “The developments we have seen are promising. We really hope that the parties are going to respect the agreed ceasefire. I think that the sense of really having the political will to have a peace process is vital. There is a little bit of hope and the role that the UN has played is very important.”

PALESTINE: “There is no easy fix. We need to find the political will and comply with the resolutions that we have agreed upon.”

OMAN: “It is a very important country in our system. They have a very important role to play in terms of the balance and peace process of that particular part of the world, in that their position is neutral. That is why it is very important to have a dialogue with the Omani authorities.”

REFORM OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL: “This is complicated and it requires time. It is dependent on the effort that members want to put into the process. It is a process that has been going on for 25 years. That process is slow but the issue is huge. I really hope we will see some progress during my tenure.”

It is a process that has been going on for 25 years. That process is slow but the issue is huge. I really hope we will see some progress during my tenure.”
