Naomi Osaka, Jurgen Klopp and the Daytona 500 pile-up: 25 of the best sports images of the week

The first tennis Grand Slam of the season reached its conclusion this week when Naomi Osaka became Australian Open champion for a second time.

After a tournament that was first delayed then put in jeopardy again due to the coronavirus, Japanese player Osaka sealed a straight sets victory over Jennifer Brady at Melbourne Park.

The 23-year-old became only the third player in the Open Era – behind Monica Seles and Roger Federer – to win her first four Grand Slam finals.

There were dramatic scenes at the Daytona 500 race last weekend when numerous cars were involved in a huge pile-up on the last lap.

Malcolm McDowell emerged from the carnage to win his first Nascar Cup Series race in 357 starts.

McDowell was running third behind Team Penske teammates Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski when he bumped Keselowski, who then hit Logano and sent both into spinning, flaming wrecks that took out both cars and several others.  Asked what happened, Logano said: "Pandemonium, I guess. Chaos struck."

Red flags
  • Promises of high, fixed or 'guaranteed' returns.
  • Unregulated structured products or complex investments often used to bypass traditional safeguards.
  • Lack of clear information, vague language, no access to audited financials.
  • Overseas companies targeting investors in other jurisdictions - this can make legal recovery difficult.
  • Hard-selling tactics - creating urgency, offering 'exclusive' deals.

How to avoid crypto fraud
  • Use unique usernames and passwords while enabling multi-factor authentication.
  • Use an offline private key, a physical device that requires manual activation, whenever you access your wallet.
  • Avoid suspicious social media ads promoting fraudulent schemes.
  • Only invest in crypto projects that you fully understand.
  • Critically assess whether a project’s promises or returns seem too good to be true.
  • Only use reputable platforms that have a track record of strong regulatory compliance.
  • Store funds in hardware wallets as opposed to online exchanges.
Conflict, drought, famine

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.

Band Aid

Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
