DUBAI // The UAE flag will be brightly illuminated under the floodlights of Losail International Circuit this weekend as two experienced Emirates-based drivers compete in Qatar's debut round of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East.
Karim Al Azhari and Musaed Al Murar will be among an international 18-car field competing in the three-year-old series' first night event. Organisers hope the lure of a floodlit Losail can build on the recent success of races at Yas Marina, Dubai Autodrome and Saudi Arabia's Reem International Circuit in attracting new followers to motorsport.
Al Azhari, the Dubai-based German who finished fourth at Reem earlier this month in what was his first race in the series, is anticipating an action-filled weekend as Porsche GT3 makes its regional debut in the darkness.
"Racing at night is totally different - you rely on being able to read the distance of headlights rather than the distance of the car in front because the lights are sometimes all you can see," said the 39 year old, who has driven 24-hour endurance races at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and the Nurburgring in Germany, and will compete in Qatar for the Al Nabooda Racing team.
"Fortunately, I have experience in endurance racing, so driving at night won't be such an issue. What is more likely to be a test for me will be the fact I have never raced at Losail before. It's a new circuit to me and, as it's only my second weekend racing in the Porsche GT3, I expect it to be tough."
Although it will probably be far tougher for Al Murar, the Emirati driver with Tolimit Arabia.
The 26 year old comfortably secured the series' Rookie Trophy last year before work commitments hindered his hopes of competing this year. The result is, when he lines up on the grid for Friday's penultimate race weekend, it will be the first time he will have raced a Porsche GT3 in almost a year.

"I really will need to take my time," he said. "I would love to go out and fight at the front, but it's more important I get some running and gradually get used to the car again. It's been a long time, so I must be cautious."
As well as ring rustiness, Al Murar has also never raced at night nor in Qatar. Yet concern is not something that comes natural to him.
"I am very excited for this race, but I do not expect anything to be overly difficult. I have been racing Porsches for two years, so to race at night on a new track might be a test, but I don't expect any nasty surprises," he said.
Abdulaziz Al Faisal, the Saudi Arabian driver who leads the championship by 16 points, knows successive victories in Qatar would put him in an almost unassailable position at the top of the standings as he chases a second title in three years for Al Faisal Racing.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.
