SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS // Fernando Alonso is the best driver in Formula One and Honda still hope to sign him for next season, the Japanese team's principal Ross Brawn has said. The double world champion's future is uncertain after a frustrating year with Renault, and Honda have made an approach to him to race for them. Brawn confirmed an offer had been made, and added: "We are just waiting. My view is that he's the best driver in Formula One at the moment and we're happy to wait and hope that he makes a positive decision for us.
"The reason I think he's the best driver is the balance of experience and ability," Alonso, 27, has also been linked strongly to Ferrari, but the Formula One leaders have both their drivers signed up to 2010 and have said they will honour those contracts. The Spaniard, who returned to Renault from McLaren this year, had said that he would decide soon on what to do, but excluded making any announcement at next weekend's Italian Grand Prix.
Renault are fifth are in fifth in the constructors' table and have not won since Alonso's last title with them in 2006. But Honda are having an even tougher time and are eighth. * Reuters
