Mohammed al Dhaheri has boosted his hopes of representing the UAE for a second successive year in international competition following his victory in the latest round of the DD2 class of the UAE Rotax Max Challenge at the weekend.
The Emirati driver represented his country in last year's Grand Finals, which were held at the La Conca circuit in Italy last November, and he is in pole position to repeat the feat this year after winning the ninth round of the championship at the Al Ain Ain Raceway on Friday.
There is the added incentive for the winner of this year's championship as Al Ain Raceway won the right to stage this year's Grand Finals and will be hosting the event at a yet to be confirmed date in November.
Al Dhaheri's cause was helped by the fact that his closest rival in the DD2 championship, Sheikh Khalid Al Nahyan, was unable to compete yesterday, and he took full advantage of that absence to move 58 points clear in the standings with just three rounds of the series to go.
While al Dhaheri led from the front throughout the event, Ashraf Raza fought hard with Patrick Jarjour to claim a well deserved second place, leaving Jarjour to take the final place on the podium.
Al Dhaheri's victory has put him 58 points ahead with three rounds to go.
The Senior Max and Max Masters class - the biggest field of the day - saw another lights-to-flag victory for Maurits Knopjes. The Oman Karting Team's Sanad al Rawahi pushed Knopjes all the way to the line but had to be happy. Nikolaus Dedic and Andrew Fuller provided one of the most entertaining battles of the day, as for the first half of the final Fuller had to vigorously defend from the hard charging Dedic.
Dedic would cross the line fourth overall and third in class, with Fuller fifth overall and second in class.
Arnoud Bouf drove a solitary race to third overall to take victory in the Masters category.
In the Junior Max class, Abdullah al Rawahi got one over on his title rival Piers Pakenham-Walsh.
The latter was up against it after going off at the first corner, but charged hard through the field to take fifth place, allowing al Rawahi to extend his slim lead in the title race.
Cyrus Engineer and Patrick Hannah put on a superb show in their battle for second place. Hannah defended second up until the penultimate corner of the final lap when Engineer used the slipstream to squeeze by and claim second behind al Rawahi.

Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away
It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.
The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.
But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.
At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.
The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.
After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.
Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.
And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.
At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.
And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.

The struggle is on for active managers
David Einhorn closed out 2018 with his biggest annual loss ever for the 22-year-old Greenlight Capital.
The firm’s main hedge fund fell 9 per cent in December, extending this year’s decline to 34 percent, according to an investor update viewed by Bloomberg.
Greenlight posted some of the industry’s best returns in its early years, but has stumbled since losing more than 20 per cent in 2015.
Other value-investing managers have also struggled, as a decade of historically low interest rates and the rise of passive investing and quant trading pushed growth stocks past their inexpensive brethren. Three Bays Capital and SPO Partners & Co., which sought to make wagers on undervalued stocks, closed in 2018. Mr Einhorn has repeatedly expressed his frustration with the poor performance this year, while remaining steadfast in his commitment to value investing.
Greenlight, which posted gains only in May and October, underperformed both the broader market and its peers in 2018. The S&P 500 Index dropped 4.4 per cent, including dividends, while the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index, an early indicator of industry performance, fell 7 per cent through December. 28.
