The Paris 2024 Olympics start with a bang on Saturday as the wait is finally over and the world's top athletes begin their pursuit of glory.
Friday night's opening ceremony declared the 33rd Summer Games officially open and now it's time for the action to commence.
That includes the hundreds of competitors from across the Mena region who are in Paris and dreaming of taking home a medal.
Everything from surfing to gymnastics is on the schedule on a blockbuster first full day of competition in the French capital.
What’s on the agenda today?
An incredibly busy day at the Paris Olympics will feature Arab athletes competing across 17 sports.
Egypt’s world No 1 sabre fencer Ziad Elsissy begins his individual campaign at Paris’ Grand Palais and has a bye in the first round.
In the round of 32, the 29-year-old Elsissy awaits the winner of the bout between Canada’s Francois Cauchon and Argentina’s Pascual Maria di Tella.
Elsissy is looking to become the second Egyptian, after foil fencer Alaaeldin Abouelkassem, to win a medal in fencing at the Olympics.
Jordan’s first Olympic gymnast Ahmad Abu Al Soud commences his assault on a historic gold in pommel horse by taking part in men’s qualification of artistic gymnastics.
The top-ranked Abu Al Soud owns two World Championship medals and swept three of the four World Cups this year in the build-up to Paris 2024.
Tennis action gets under way at Roland Garros with Lebanese wildcard Hady Habib taking on reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz on Court Suzanne Lenglen, while his countryman Benjamin Hassan will face American Christopher Eubanks last on Court 7.
Tunisian Moez Echargui, who punched his ticket to the Olympics by clinching gold at the African Games in men’s tennis singles, is also in action against Great Britain’s Dan Evans.
In the evening, 16-year-old table tennis prodigy Hana Goda of Egypt will get her Paris 2024 Olympics under way with a round of 64 clash against 30-year-old Dutchwoman Britt Eerland.
Egyptian duo Omar Assar and Dina Meshref will be in action in table tennis mixed doubles.
Egypt’s men’s handball team are podium contenders in Paris and will start their Group B play with a showdown against Hungary, while Egypt (v Uzbekistan), Iraq (v Argentina), and Morocco (v Ukraine) will all contest their second round-robin football games today.
Iraq enjoyed a dramatic start to the men's football section in midweek as substitute Ali Jasim secured a 2-1 win against Ukraine in Group B. Egypt were held to a 0-0 draw by Dominican Republic in their Group C opener.
Morocco, meanwhile, got off to a flying start with a controversial 2-1 win over Argentina, also in Group B.
Some 16,000km away in Tahiti, the surfing competition will begin with Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam looking to replicate the form that won him third place at the very same wave – the famous Teahupo’o – earlier this season on the WSL Championship Tour.

October 26: Bahrain withdraws from a proposal to create a federation of nine with the seven Trucial States and Qatar.
December: Ahmed Al Suwaidi visits New York to discuss potential UN membership.

March 1: Alex Douglas Hume, Conservative foreign secretary confirms that Britain will leave the Gulf and “strongly supports” the creation of a Union of Arab Emirates.
July 12: Historic meeting at which Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid make a binding agreement to create what will become the UAE.
July 18: It is announced that the UAE will be formed from six emirates, with a proposed constitution signed. RAK is not yet part of the agreement.

December 2: 11am, Dubai. New Supreme Council formally elects Sheikh Zayed as President. Treaty of Friendship signed with the UK. 11.30am. Flag raising ceremony at Union House and Al Manhal Palace in Abu Dhabi witnessed by Sheikh Khalifa, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
December 6: Arab League formally admits the UAE. The first British Ambassador presents his credentials to Sheikh Zayed.
December 9: UAE joins the United Nations.

The American singer is hugely respected in blues circles due to her passionate vocals and songwriting. Born and raised in Michigan, Williams began recording and touring as a teenage gospel singer. Her career took off with the blues band The Wiseguys. Such was the acclaim of their live shows that they toured throughout Europe and in Africa. As a solo artist, Williams has also collaborated with the likes of the late Dizzy Gillespie, Van Morrison and Mavis Staples.
Lin Rountree
An accomplished smooth jazz artist who blends his chilled approach with R‘n’B. Trained at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC, Rountree formed his own band in 2004. Dubai-based singer Anita Williams will open the night with a set of covers and swing, jazz and blues standards that made her an in-demand singer across the emirate. The Irish singer has been performing in Dubai since 2008 at venues such as MusicHall and Voda Bar. Her Jazz Garden appearance is career highlight as she will use the event to perform the original song Big Blue Eyes, the single from her debut solo album, due for release soon.

Do your homework
Make sure that you are being offered a fair salary. There is lots of industry data available, and you can always talk to people who have come out of the organisation. Where I see people coming a cropper is where they haven’t done their homework.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate
It’s quite standard to negotiate if you think an offer is on the low side. The job is unlikely to be withdrawn if you ask for money, and if that did happen I’d question whether you want to work for an employer who is so hypersensitive.
Know your worth
Women tend to be a bit more reticent to talk about their achievements. In my experience they need to have more confidence in their own abilities – men will big up what they’ve done to get a pay rise, and to compete women need to turn up the volume.
Work together
If you suspect men in your organisation are being paid more, look your boss in the eye and say, “I want you to assure me that I’m paid equivalent to my peers”. If you’re not getting a straight answer, talk to your peer group and consider taking direct action to fix inequality.
