DUBAI // The UAE saw their chances of success at the first West Asia Sevens double before a ball was even kicked on Friday after Iran pulled out of the competition at the 11th hour.
The Iranians, who would have been among the favourites to win the competition, opted not to travel to Dubai on account of visa issues, a problem which had also afflicted their challenge in the final leg of the Asian Sevens Series recently.
In Iran's absence, the UAE Rugby Federation hastily assembled a second-string Shaheen side, including a few willing expatriate players from Dubai Wasps.
The rejig may have devalued the tournament slightly from an international perspective.
But the powers-that-be here will be delighted at the chance the new look afforded for extra-novice Emiratis to have a taste of match action.
The federation has entered a senior side in the International Men's competition at the Dubai Rugby Sevens later this month, while a fully Emirati Shaheen side will play in the Gulf Men's tournament.
"We want to put two sides out at the Dubai Rugby Sevens so we need players to get chances like this," said Duncan Hall, the national performance manager, who is in charge of the UAE side this weekend.
"We have lots of fast wingers and some guys who can play in the forwards, but our challenge at the moment is to find playmakers to play in the middle of the field."
A 31-0 win over Shaheen followed by a 12-5 success against Saudi Arabia meant the UAE qualified through to today's final day in second place in the competition.
Lebanon were by far the strongest side on the opening day of competition and the will face Shaheen, who finished Friday's pool matches placed fourth, in the first match on Saturday.
The final is at 12.40pm.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially
Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
