NHL: Staal brothers fire Carolina to victory over Toronto as Wild sign Rupp

Goals from Eric Staal, the Hurricanes captain, and younger brother Jordan drove Carlona to a 4-1 win over the struggling Maple Leafs.

The Carolina Hurricanes had a pair of goals from the Staal brothers and a stellar performance from goalie Cam Ward to thank for a 4-1 victory over the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.

Carolina erased an early one-goal deficit by dominating the second period, in which they outshot the host Maple Leafs 20-5 and got goals from captain Eric Staal and younger brother Jordan.

Third period tallies from Justin Faulk, who scored on a two-man advantage 43 seconds into the final frame, and Patrick Dwyer put the game out of reach for Toronto, who dropped to 1-4 on home ice this season.

Ward allowed the opening goal less than six minutes into the game when Matt Fratin shoved a rebound by him, but the former Stanley Cup-winning goalie was brilliant the rest of the way and turned aside 40 of 41 Toronto shots in total, including several chances from in close.

The San Jose Sharks suffered their first regulation defeat of the NHL season after the Anaheim Ducks came from behind to claim a 2-1 win.

Despite taking the lead through Logan Couture's second-period goal, the Sharks were pegged back by Saku Koivu before Sheldon Souray netted late on.

It has been a forgettable last few days for San Jose, who won their first seven games before a shoot-out defeat to Nashville on Saturday.

Chris Tanev's overtime winner helped the Vancouver Canucks come from behind to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2.

The Western Conference north-west leaders looked on course for defeat with just over two minutes left after goals from Ales Hemsky and Ryan Smyth put the Oilers 2-1 ahead.

But Vancouver, who had just a Jannik Hansen goal to show for their efforts, levelled proceedings courtesy of Kevin Bieksa's long shot before Tanev completed the comeback in the fifth minute of overtime.

Lauri Korpikoski and Martin Hanzal were on the scoresheet as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1.

It was Mike Smith who was the Coyotes' star performer after he made 21 saves during the course of the match, but was denied a clean sheet by Zach Parise's 200th career goal

Jamie Benn scored twice as the Dallas Stars edged out the Colorado Avalanche 3-2.

Meanwhile the Minnesota Wild added some leadership and grit to their line-up by acquiring veteran forward Mike Rupp from the New York Rangers.

The Wild, who made a major splash in the off season by signing free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter to matching $98 million deals, continue to tweak their roster, sending forwards Darroll Powe and Nick Palmieri to New York for the 33-year-old Rupp.

The well-travelled Rupp, who scored the winning goal in the 2003 Stanley Cup final, has had stints New Jersey Devils, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins and Rangers during 10 NHL seasons, recording 53 goals, 41 assists and 765 penalty minutes.
