Mark Webber said Thursday that he expected his contract extension with Red Bull Racing to be completed in the very near future.
But the Australian added that he did not consider it to be a "formality".
Asked about his future contract, he said: "Not far away - decisions will be made shortly so it should be pretty close to doing something."
He confirmed he had met Dietrich Mateschitz, the Red Bull owner, during Formula One's enforced summer break to discuss the future and had then held further talks with Christian Horner, the Red Bull team principal.
He said it would not be fair to consider a new contract to be a formality.
"That would be cheeky of me. My decision has to be taken into account, although the team's decision is pretty clear. Obviously Dietrich has been great, as have all the boys and everyone at the team. All will become clear shortly," he said.
Webber has raced for Red Bull since 2007.
