The Brooklyn Nets beat the New York Knicks 96-89 in an overtime thriller on Monday in the first battle for New York bragging rights between the city rivals.
The victory lifted the Nets (9-4) into a tie with the Knicks (9-4) for first place in the Atlantic Division.
"Every time some sort of Knick contingent started to cheer, our fans got louder and this is what we have been dreaming about since I have been here," said Avery Johnson, the Nets coach.
"It is a nice feeling and I am glad we rewarded our fans with a victory. They deserved it."
Tied 84-84 after regulation, the Knicks scored the first points of the extra period, but the Nets countered with eight points in a row, the last three from hustling plays by Gerald Wallace to surge to a 92-86 lead and were never threatened.
Center Brook Lopez led the Nets with 22 points, with Deron Williams and Wallace scoring 16 points each.
Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks' scoring leader who was born in Brooklyn, led New York with 35 points, while centre Tyson Chandler had 28 points on 12-of-13 shooting with his hoops coming from tip-ins, follow-ups and slam dunks.
The game had been originally set to kick off the NBA season for the New York teams but was postponed due to the damage in the area caused superstorm Sandy.
While that thrill was gone from this initial clash between the teams, the tension was heightened by the great start enjoyed by both in the early days of the season.
Blue-and-orange clad Knicks fans made themselves heard in the new arena, which is just a 25-minute subway ride from midtown Manhattan, but their chants were drowned out by the singsong "Brooklyn, Brooklyn, Brooklyn" favoured by Nets fans embracing their new home following their move from New Jersey.
"I thought it was a big game in general for us," said Williams afterwards. "It's hard to deny the atmosphere. It definitely was an exciting game for us.
"It was a total 180 (degrees) from last year when it was mostly Knicks fans and all the chants and cheers were for them," added Williams about their games against New York when they were in New Jersey.
"It was great to feel that we have a home court advantage finally."
The Milwaukee Bucks came from behind to record a thrilling one-point win over NBA Central Division rivals the Chicago Bulls.
The Bucks, who stay top of the standings as a result of their win, were 10 points behind by halfway but Ersan Ilyasova led a fightback as he scored all 12 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Richard Hamilton collected 30 points for the Bulls but had a chance to win it on the buzzer and missed.
Oklahoma City Thunder ran riot against the Charlotte Bobcats, who eventually went down 114-69.
The lead was an astonishing 64-24 after two quarters and 79-25 by the time the Thunder's starting side was pulled to the bench with the job done.
Kevin Durant closed with 18 points, Thabo Sefolosha added 14 and Russell Westbrook claimed a double-double as they secured victory.
The Memphis Grizzlies ensured they stay at the South-west Division summit with an enviable 10-2 record thanks to an 84-78 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph each claimed 19 points, while the Cavaliers' Anderson Varejao augmented 15 points with 22 rebounds.
The Utah Jazz remain undefeated after six home games following a 105-103 win over the Denver Nuggets.
Al Jefferson's 28 points headlined a top-scoring affair for Utah, with Kenneth Faried's 21 points the most on the Denver side.
Another free-flowing contest saw the Detroit Pistons beat the Portland Trail Blazers 108-101 for only their fourth win of the season.
LaMarcus Aldridge impressed with 32 points but did not find sufficient backup and ended up defeated by a Detroit side who were led by Brandon Knight's 26 points.
Twenty-six points separated the sides as the San Antonio Spurs saw off the winless Washington Wizards 118-92.
The Wizards now have a woeful record of 0-12 after seven players got into double figures for the victorious Spurs - Boris Diaw's 16-point haul the best of the bunch.
The Los Angeles Clippers slipped to a 105-98 defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Hornets despite the best efforts of Caron Butler, who weighed in with 33 points.
Greivis Vasquez was the winning side's top performer with 25 points and 10 assists.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.

Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.

When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. It is the three Michelinstarred chef’s first venture in Dubai and should be every bit as ambitious as you would expect from the man whose restaurant in Italy, Osteria Francescana, was crowned number one in this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Another exciting opening at the W Dubai – The Palm hotel is South Korean chef Akira Back’s new restaurant, which will continue to showcase some of the finest Asian food in the world. Back, whose Seoul restaurant, Dosa, won a Michelin star last year, describes his menu as, “an innovative Japanese cuisine prepared with a Korean accent”.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
The highly experimental chef, whose dishes are as much about spectacle as taste, opens his first restaurant in Dubai next year. Housed at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will feature contemporary twists on recipes that date back to the 1300s, including goats’ milk cheesecake. Always remember with a Blumenthal dish: nothing is quite as it seems.
The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.
Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”
One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.
Also, globally, many companies have found the perfect way to recycle old coffee grounds: they create the perfect fertile soil in which to grow mushrooms.
