NEW YORK // The New York Islanders climbed off the bottom of the standings with a 2-1 win over the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers. Joey MacDonald made 35 saves as the Islanders won their second successive game after a six-game losing streak despite being out-shot 36-19 and out-played most of the night. MacDonald, who was filling in for the injured Rick DiPietro, said: "Tonight we were out-shot by a lot but we stuck to our game plan and capitalised on our chances."
The Islanders' coach Scott Gordon praised MacDonald's performance as well as giving credit to the team's ability to kill off the Rangers' power play. Both of the Islanders' goals were scored while they were a man down. "Our penalty kill and goaltender bailed us out," he said. The Rangers still lead the Eastern Conference standings but the defeat was their second in a row after a 5-2 loss in Toronto on Saturday.
After two scoreless periods the Islanders scored twice early in the third period through Nate Thompson and Richard Park. Thompson's goal was his first NHL point. "It was a great feeling on the bench after the goal," Thompson said. "The team was lifted from it." Markus Naslund spoiled MacDonald's shutout with just 1:41 remaining in the third period, but the Rangers could not equalise. Carolina's Niclas Wallin hit the overtime winner to seal a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs and earn coach Peter Laviolette a record-tying 239th career coaching win.

Financial considerations before buying a property
Buyers should try to pay as much in cash as possible for a property, limiting the mortgage value to as little as they can afford. This means they not only pay less in interest but their monthly costs are also reduced. Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
