Juventus earned a narrow 1-0 win in a heated derby match at city rivals Torino to move provisionally to joint top of the Serie A table on 16 points with Napoli.
Inter Milan are two points behind after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Cagliari, while lowly Sassuolo picked up a second point of the season, coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 against high-flying Lazio.
In Turin, Paul Pogba scored a contentious 54th-minute winner for Juventus, heading in the rebound after Carlos Tevez's header came off the crossbar. There were fierce protests from Torino, however, as Tevez appeared to be offside.
However, Juventus coach Antonio Conte said that Torino's Ciro Immobile should have been sent off for a tackle from behind on Tevez minutes before the goal, which has left the Argentine doubtful to face Galatasaray in the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday.
"There's a deep cut and I don't know if it will need stitches. I hope he can play on Wednesday," said Conte. "Sometimes, decisions go your way and sometimes they go against you.
"I don't know how the match would have ended if Torino had played for a whole half with 10 men.
"We were very alert and exact in the defence, without giving space to Torino."
Torino had gone close in a scrappy first half, with Danilo d'Ambrosio heading just over the bar and Alessio Cerci whipping a free kick just past the left post.
Torino have not won the Derby della Mole since 1995, and have not scored in the past 15 editions.
Cagliari are playing home matches in Trieste due to ongoing stadium troubles in Sardinia and Inter had several chances to take the lead, but the "home" side were rescued by the heroics of goalkeeper Michael Agazzi, who pulled off impressive saves to deny Yuto Nagatomo, Fredy Guarin (twice) and Ishak Belfodil.
Inter broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when Mauro Icardi headed in Nagatomo's pass, following a well-worked move.
However, Cagliari levelled five minutes from full time as a deflection off Rolando took Radja Nainggolan's shot past a hapless Samir Handanovic.
Sassuolo had the worst attack and worst defence heading into the match against Lazio, with two goals scored and 16 conceded.
However, their first ever Serie A point – in a 1-1 draw at Napoli midweek – had given them confidence and Sassuolo dominated the first half.
The home side had several chances to take the lead and Simone Zaza, who had scored both Sassuolo's goals, headed a cross onto the bar in the 26th minute.
Lazio took the lead against the run of play five minutes after the interval, when Andre Dias headed Antonio Candreva's corner into the bottom-left corner.
Sassuolo even went close to winning the match in the final 10 minutes.
Elsewhere, striker German Denis tormented former club Udinese as his two goals gave Atalanta a 2-0 win.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
