DOHA // Australia reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bahrain last night to secure first place in Group C on goal difference ahead of second-placed South Korea.
Mile Jedinak scored his first international goal in Australia's draw against South Korea in their second group match on Friday and got his second in as many games against Bahrain when he fired a fine dipping shot from over 20 yards into the back of the net in the 37th minute.
Australia needed just a point to progress but they attacked from the outset as Brett Emerton pulled a shot wide after just two minutes before Tim Cahill fired wide from outside the area.
Bahrain, needing a win to stay in the tournament, kept Australia on the back foot for most of the second half in driving rain at the Al Sadd Stadium in Qatar's capital, but could not find a way past an impressive Mark Schwarzer in the Socceroos goal.
Unlike South Korea, who walloped hapless India 4-1 in the group's other match, Australia were up against a side still with a chance of reaching the quarter-finals, and it showed in a closely fought first half.
Bahrain threatened with some neat interchanges, and after picking up a clever pass from Abdulla Fatadi, Ismaeel Abdulatif almost added to the four goals he scored against India but smacked the outside of a post with an angled shot in the 31st minute.
A minute later, Brett Holman squared for Harry Kewell, who was denied by Mahmood Mansoor, the goalkeeper.
Cahill might have made it 2-0 early in the second half, but he headed wide after Kewell had beaten the offside trap, skipped past the keeper and crossed for the Everton midfielder.
Bahrain continued to make it uncomfortable for Australia with Abdulatif their main attacking threat.
Jaycee John had the Australian defence in a panic in the 57th minute but Lucas Neill blocked the forward's sight of goal and in the end he could only lash a shot into the side-netting.
Schwarzer made diving saves from Abdulatif and Fatadi to keep his side in front.
Schwarzer again came to his side's rescue in the 67th minute, this time keeping the ball out with his feet after a cross found Abdulatif in space at the far post.
As full time approached, Bahrain's attacks finally petered out into a midfield battle, with Australia happy to sit back and defend their lead.
But the match ended on a worrying note for the Socceroos when Cahill limped off in added time after being injured in a challenge.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE
UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.
Bidders and potential buyers register on the online salvage car auction portal to view vehicles, review condition reports, or arrange physical surveys, and then start bidding for motors they plan to restore or harvest for parts.
Physical salvage car auctions are a common method for insurers around the world to move on heavily damaged vehicles, but AWNIC is one of the few UAE insurers to offer such services online.
For cars and less sizeable items such as bicycles and furniture, Dubizzle is arguably the best-known marketplace for pre-loved.
Founded in 2005, in recent years it has been joined by a plethora of Facebook community pages for shifting used goods, including Abu Dhabi Marketplace, Flea Market UAE and Arabian Ranches Souq Market while sites such as The Luxury Closet and Riot deal largely in second-hand fashion.
At the high-end of the pre-used spectrum, resellers such as Timepiece360.ae, WatchBox Middle East and Watches Market Dubai deal in authenticated second-hand luxury timepieces from brands such as Rolex, Hublot and Tag Heuer, with a warranty.
