DUBAI // Jay Price celebrated his birthday by claiming top honours in the Speed Cat run during the final round of the UIM Skydive Dubai XCAT World Series at the Dubai International Marine Club yesterday.

Racing alongside Salem Al Adidi, the UAE-American pair aboard Dubai (Team DTCM) had a disappointing morning session but ran through all opposition in the afternoon’s knock-out race. They beat T-Bone Station (Luca Fendi and Giovanni Carpitella) comfortably in the end.

Meanwhile, Videx teammates Alfredo Amato and Marco Pennesi will start in front for the main race today after finishing at the top in qualifying. The Italian team turned in a lap time of two minutes, 53.79 seconds over rough water to earn their second pole position of the season.

Amato is hoping for the better having failed to convert good times into results. “We have done well this season in pole position, with two firsts and two seconds, but we seem to then fail in the races,” he said. “Hopefully, we will get it right.”

France’s Francois Pinelli and Saul Bubacco were about 1.5 seconds behind the Videx team. The Italian duo of Fendi and Carpitella had the third-best time.

Several boats can still finish behind leaders Fazza, including the T-Bone Station team.

“We pushed hard but we didn’t take any risks,” Carpitella said, “because we are here to play with No 7 [DTCM] for second place in the championship, so we want to save everything. They are in the back, in eighth position, so for us it’s perfect.”

The main race will take place at 2.30pm today.
