Indiana Pacers won 49 games last year and captured the Central Division, so why does is seem like they are sneaking up on the rest of the NBA this season?
They were recognised as a "good" team, which may be exactly what has grated the Pacers. They believe they can be "great". So they took little satisfaction in pushing Miami Heat to seven games before falling. They have bigger things in mind this season.
“I wanted them to come back with the mindset that we do have something special here,” said Paul George, the Indiana forward.
The Pacers are off to a special start. They are the last unbeaten team standing, their 7-0 start only fuelling the confidence that began to swell last season. Included in their winning streak is a 17-point victory over Chicago Bulls and a 96-91 victory at Brooklyn Nets.
They are not acting bashful, either. They are promoting George as an early MVP candidate. Roy Hibbert, the centre, has flat out said he wants to win the Defensive Player of the Year award. And they have declared their intention to finish the regular season with the league’s best record.
“We believe in this locker room that we can get the No 1 seed and we started the year with that attitude,” said David West, the Pacers forward. “The fact that Game 7 of the conference finals wasn’t in our home building, we felt was the difference in a trip to the Finals and we’re going to do everything in our power to get a Game 7 in our building.”
The Pacers’ core has been together for three seasons. And new bench players CJ Watson and Luis Scola are veterans used to being role players. It is a mature team, acting hungry.
An excellent defensive team last season, they may be even better now. They lead the league in 8.7 blocks per game, are holding opponents to an NBA-best 85.3 points and a 38.9 shooting percentage, and have outscored their opponents by 9.6 points per game, also best in the league.
“I think we have a championship-level defence,” said Pacers coach Frank Vogel. “And we’ve got enough offensive pieces to put it all together on the offensive end. So it will be an exciting year.”
George is averaging 25.1 points per game, third-best in the league. Last season, he was the league’s Most Improved Player. This season, he may be approaching superstar status.
“I feel like I’m coming into my own, I feel confident out there,” George said. “I want to be considered an elite player on both ends.”
The Pacers know the path to the NBA Finals in the East they will have to go through the champions, Miami, the team that knocked them out of the post-season the past two years.
“We were 8-1 at home in the play-offs last year,” Vogel said. “To lose a Game 7 on the road, that’s a tough environment. We’re trying for that No 1 seed. We’re going for it.”

What is myofascial pain syndrome?
Myofascial pain syndrome refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissue. MPS is a chronic condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles, which develops knots, also known as trigger points).
What are trigger points?
Trigger points are irritable knots in the soft tissue that covers muscle tissue. Through injury or overuse, muscle fibres contract as a reactive and protective measure, creating tension in the form of hard and, palpable nodules. Overuse and sustained posture are the main culprits in developing trigger points.
What is myofascial or trigger-point release?
Releasing these nodules requires a hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure to release muscular shortness and tightness. This eliminates restrictions in connective tissue in orderto restore motion and alleviate pain. Therapy balls have proven effective at causing enough commotion in the tissue, prompting the release of these hard knots.

What is Folia?
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.
Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."
Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.
In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".
There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.
While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."
