All the talk at Eastlands may be about which new players could be arriving in the transfer window, but Mark Hughes has challenged those currently occupying a Manchester City place to show they can take on any newcomers.
To say that his players are fighting for their futures is an understatement. City's disappointing position in the bottom three has left their manager with much to ponder after a frustrating season which promised much, but has so far failed to deliver.
With reassurances from the board, Hughes is ready to spend in the January transfer window and a multitude of names continue to be linked with a move to Eastlands.
But it doesn't matter who arrives to strengthen his side, the City chief wants his current players to reproduce the form that saw them tipped for a European spot at the start of the campaign.
With just one win in nine league games, Hughes said: "You need to be strong mentally and take up the challenge. If you do that then the future at City will be there for you. There should not be an issue, but maybe players are possibly being affected by that. I have not seen it in their play, but as a professional footballer you've got to put that situation to the back of your mind. In the end with a little bit more quality added to squad then things will turn for the better. We're all striving to be successful for Manchester City.
"It is difficult for everybody at the moment. We need to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible because this run has gone on for too long."
City certainly need the return of Robinho from an ankle injury to provide some quality against Hull today. Phil Brown's side may not have as many household names, but have upset many of their more fancied rivals in the league with spirit being the key.
While the Brazilian midfielder Geovanni returns to his old Eastlands stomping ground, Hughes will be able to get a close look at one player who has been linked with City. Michael Turner's impressive performances in the Hull defence have also led to talk about an England call-up, but he is not getting carried away. "Like any English player, I would love to play for England, but at the moment I've only played 18 games in the top division," he said.
"I'm not the kind of person who will let talk of England go to my head. I've worked hard to get here and just want to keep improving as an individual and help this club keep running in the right direction."

Tomato and walnut salad
A lesson in simple, seasonal eating. Wedges of tomato, chunks of cucumber, thinly sliced red onion, coriander or parsley leaves, and perhaps some fresh dill are drizzled with a crushed walnut and garlic dressing. Do consider yourself warned: if you eat this salad in Georgia during the summer months, the tomatoes will be so ripe and flavourful that every tomato you eat from that day forth will taste lacklustre in comparison.
Badrijani nigvzit
A delicious vegetarian snack or starter. It consists of thinly sliced, fried then cooled aubergine smothered with a thick and creamy walnut sauce and folded or rolled. Take note, even though it seems like you should be able to pick these morsels up with your hands, they’re not as durable as they look. A knife and fork is the way to go.
Pkhali
This healthy little dish (a nice antidote to the khachapuri) is usually made with steamed then chopped cabbage, spinach, beetroot or green beans, combined with walnuts, garlic and herbs to make a vegetable pâté or paste. The mix is then often formed into rounds, chilled in the fridge and topped with pomegranate seeds before being served.

Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away
It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.
The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.
But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.
At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.
The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.
After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.
Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.
And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.
At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.
And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.
