ABU DHABI // This was not how the Fifa Under 17 World Cup was meant to start for the UAE.
A committed rearguard at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium on the opening night of the tournament against Honduras was ended by a late goal, a harsh result for a side reduced to 10 men too early in the game yet one that somehow maintained parity until then.
Indeed, as often happens, the UAE got their act together only after Sultan Al Shamsi had been given a straight red 24 minutes into the game for a challenge on Anoal Hernandez out on the left. The decision by Gianluca Rocchi to show red was considered harsh by some, including the UAE coach Rashid Amir. “In my opinion, our player didn’t deserve a red card,” he said. “It was a foul but a yellow, at the most.”
He said the numerical disadvantage, over the final 66 minutes, and some missed chances, doomed his side.
“We had a nice start. We created a few early scoring chances and missed at least two opportunities during that period, and then the red card, all this upset our game plan,” he said.
“We expected to win the first game but that didn’t happen. Now we have to take the difficult path playing Brazil in the next match. Yes, they are very strong team but we need to win the next two to have any chance of going beyond the group stage.”
Honduras were probably better than many might have expected and certainly as an attacking force they brought both incisiveness and trickery. Much of their prompting came from Isaac Borjas and the wonderfully named Rembrandt Flores, a nimble pair of attacking architects.
With Alberth Elis providing a strong and fast outlet, threats emerged. The first clear chance came after 19 minutes, Elis bursting past his marker only to shoot wide when through. But reward came soon enough and it was little surprise that Elis and Flores were involved; Elis broke down the left and played the ball across the edge of the penalty area.
Flores could have shot but chose, unselfishly, to lay it further across for Fredy Medina, who rifled home low to Mohammed Al Shamsi’s right.
The match turned further in their favour with Sultan Al Shamsi’s dismissal minutes later, but that was merely the push the home side needed to get their act together and in Mohammed Al Akberi they had the heart of all that was good about their recovery.
He had missed a golden chance in the second minute, when one on one, but he now became two men at once up front. He linked play, held the ball up, started attacks and turned up at the end of them. He was involved in their equaliser just after the half hour, Suhail Al Noobi chipping Al Akberi’s pass into the box, where Khaled Khalfan burst past the keeper to finish.
They were barely troubled after that, and not through much of the second half in which Al Akberi’s wispy mobility was a constant, counterattacking danger. Few clear chances emerged, but as the game entered the last quarter, Borjas, Flores and Brayan Velasquez assumed increasing influence.
Twice, from a corner, Abdullah Al Hammadi saved the UAE with point-blank blocks off the line. But the inherent skill of the Honduras forward line, even if intermittent by then, felt decisive. Sure enough, with four minutes left, Velasquez popped up on the edge of the penalty area to arrow home a winner; they probably just about deserved it, though Al Akberi and the UAE did not deserve their fate.
Jose Valladares, the Honduras coach, acknowledged the red card to Sultan Al Shamsi benefitted his team.
“It is a fact and we capitalised on the numerical advantage,” he said. “We are comfortable with the three points at the moment but that doesn’t guarantee us qualification to the knockout round.”

The Al Jazira playmaker has for some time been tipped for stardom within UAE football, with Quique Sanchez Flores, his former manager at Al Ahli, once labelling him a “genius”. He was only 17. Now 23, Mubarak has developed into a crafty supplier of chances, evidenced by his seven assists in six league matches this season. Still to display his class at international level, though.
Rayan Yaslam
The Al Ain attacking midfielder has become a regular starter for his club in the past 15 months. Yaslam, 23, is a tidy and intelligent player, technically proficient with an eye for opening up defences. Developed while alongside Abdulrahman in the Al Ain first-team and has progressed well since manager Zoran Mamic’s arrival. However, made his UAE debut only last December.
Ismail Matar
The Al Wahda forward is revered by teammates and a key contributor to the squad. At 35, his best days are behind him, but Matar is incredibly experienced and an example to his colleagues. His ability to cope with tournament football is a concern, though, despite Matar beginning the season well. Not a like-for-like replacement, although the system could be adjusted to suit.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

What is Reform?
Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.
